Antonelli San Marco Tasting
January 18, 2019 @ 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm
FreeAntonelli San Marco was founded in 1881 in the heart of Umbria’s famed Montefalco region and has since 1986 been run by Filippo Antonelli, the fifth generation on the Antonelli family to head the estate. While they produced several lovely whites, the stars of the winery are the wines made from the Sagrantino variety.
Indigineous to central Umbria and mostly grown in the area surrounding the village of Montefalco, Sagrantino is still a little known variety outside of Umbria, but in recent years has seen a substantial increase in popularity. One of the most tannic varieties in the world, it produces dark and dense wines, with rich flavors of cherry and blackberry complemented by spicy and earthy secondary characteristics. Its high tannins and affinity for oak make wines that age very well, but with modern techniques are generally fairly approachable in their youth.
We will be tasting a selection of current realeases from Antonelli, starting with their refreshing and lively whites through the range of their reds, including both Montefalco Rossos (Sangiovese based blends with Sagrantino) and Sagrantino di Montefalco (varietal Sagrantinos with over three years of aging before release). Stop by any time on Friday January 18th from 4-8PM to give them a try!
